How I Published My First Paperback Book with Amazon KDP

Author publishing a paperback book through Amazon KDP while working on a manuscript in a home office

Introduction

For many aspiring authors, publishing a book feels like an impossible goal.

For years, traditional publishing was the only realistic option. Writers had to find agents, submit manuscripts, and hope a publisher would take a chance on their work.

Today, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has changed that process dramatically.

Recently, I published my thriller novel, The Last Time She Called, in both Kindle and paperback formats using Amazon KDP. While there were challenges along the way, the entire process was more accessible than I expected.

In this article, I’ll share my journey from manuscript to published paperback and the lessons I learned along the way.

Writing the Novel

Finding the Idea

Every book starts with an idea.

For The Last Time She Called, I wanted to create a suspense-filled thriller that kept readers guessing until the end. The concept began with a seemingly ordinary phone call that would ultimately uncover dangerous secrets and unexpected twists.

Once I had the core concept, the challenge became transforming that idea into a complete story.

Completing the Manuscript

Writing a novel requires persistence.

There were days when the words flowed effortlessly and others when progress was slow. Like many writers, I discovered that finishing the manuscript was often more difficult than starting it.

One lesson quickly became clear:

You can’t edit a book that isn’t finished.

Instead of constantly revising early chapters, I focused on reaching the end of the story first.

Once the first draft was complete, the real work began.

Editing and Revisions

No manuscript is perfect after the first draft.

I spent time reviewing the story for:

  • Plot consistency
  • Character development
  • Pacing
  • Grammar and spelling
  • Overall readability

Each revision improved the book and helped prepare it for publication.

Preparing the Book for Publication

Formatting the Interior

One of the first surprises was how important formatting becomes when preparing a paperback.

Unlike an ebook, a printed book must meet specific requirements regarding:

  • Page size
  • Margins
  • Headers and footers
  • Chapter spacing
  • Page numbering

Amazon provides templates and guidelines, but attention to detail is critical.

A formatting mistake might not be noticeable on a computer screen but can become obvious in a printed book.

Designing the Cover

Readers absolutely judge books by their covers.

I wanted a cover that immediately communicated suspense and mystery.

The cover needed to:

  • Look professional
  • Match the thriller genre
  • Remain readable at thumbnail size
  • Work in both Kindle and paperback formats

Creating the full paperback wraparound cover required additional work because the spine and back cover must also be designed.

Publishing the Kindle Edition First

Setting Up Amazon KDP

Amazon KDP provides a straightforward platform for independent authors.

The process involved:

  • Creating book details
  • Writing a description
  • Choosing keywords
  • Selecting categories
  • Uploading the manuscript
  • Uploading the cover

The platform guides users through each step.

Uploading the eBook

Once everything was prepared, I uploaded the Kindle version.

Amazon conducted its review process and eventually approved the ebook for publication.

Seeing my book listed on Amazon for the first time was a rewarding experience.

After months of writing and editing, the project finally became a real product that readers could purchase.

Creating the Paperback Edition

Uploading the Print Files

The paperback process is similar to publishing an ebook but includes additional print requirements.

I uploaded:

  • The print-ready manuscript
  • The paperback cover
  • Paperback publishing details
  • Pricing information

Amazon then generated a preview of how the book would appear when printed.

Reviewing the Preview

The online previewer became one of the most useful tools in the process.

It allowed me to:

  • Inspect page layout
  • Verify margins
  • Review chapter formatting
  • Check for print issues

Before approving the paperback, I carefully reviewed every section.

The Waiting Process

Draft Status

One lesson I learned was understanding Amazon’s publishing statuses.

Initially, my paperback showed as “Draft.”

At first, I assumed Amazon was reviewing it.

However, I eventually realized the book had not actually been submitted and that I needed to complete the final publishing step.

That taught me an important lesson:

Always make sure you’ve clicked the final publish button.

In Review

After submission, the paperback entered the “In Review” stage.

During this period, Amazon checks:

  • File quality
  • Formatting
  • Cover compliance
  • Technical requirements

Waiting for approval can test your patience.

Publishing

The next status change was “Publishing.”

This stage indicated the review process had been completed successfully and Amazon was preparing the paperback listing.

Seeing that status was a major sign that the book was nearing publication.

The Big Moment: Paperback Published

Then the email arrived.

Amazon informed me that The Last Time She Called had officially been published as a paperback.

After months of writing, editing, formatting, and publishing work, the book was live.

That moment felt different from completing the manuscript.

It felt real.

The book was no longer a file on my computer.

It was now an actual paperback available for readers around the world.

What I Learned from Self-Publishing

Lesson 1: Finishing Matters More Than Perfection

Many aspiring authors never finish their books because they continually revise unfinished work.

Completing the manuscript is the first major victory.

Lesson 2: KDP Is Easier Than Expected

While there is definitely a learning curve, Amazon KDP makes independent publishing accessible for first-time authors.

The platform walks users through most of the process.

Lesson 3: Patience Is Essential

Publishing involves waiting.

There are reviews, approvals, updates, and processing times.

The key is to trust the process and allow Amazon’s systems to do their work.

Lesson 4: Publishing Is Only the Beginning

Writing and publishing create the product.

Marketing helps readers discover it.

Promotion becomes the next challenge after publication.

Advice for New Authors

If you’re thinking about publishing your own book, here are a few suggestions:

Finish the Manuscript

A completed manuscript is infinitely more valuable than an unfinished masterpiece.

Learn as You Go

You don’t need to know everything before starting.

Most publishing knowledge can be learned during the process.

Expect Mistakes

Every author encounters challenges.

The important thing is continuing forward.

Publish the Book

At some point, preparation must become action.

Many people dream about becoming authors.

Publishing happens when you decide to move forward.
